The end of the PhD journey

It was over five and a half years ago when I first sat down at my PhD desk to begin my journey to uncover the secrets of Pterostylis pollination. A lot has changed since then - we moved buildings at uni, I spent years in the field chasing gnats and in the lab working out chemistry, I published two papers on my research, I moved to Arnhem Land and moved back again, I started working in the public service and I submitted my PhD thesis.

Today, at least symbolically, I capped off that journey as I graduated from my PhD at the ANU.

It's pollinator week!

This week, from the 12th to the 19th of November, is Australian Pollinator Week. It was created to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and of the recent declines in insect abundance. Say g'day to an insect, plant a flowering shrub, and don't use pesticides, and the indispensable insects may just survive.

It is entirely possible that each time I go to WA I will come back with a new favourite Banksia. This August, Ali and I discovered the gaudy, eye-watering colours of Banksia coccinea, the aptly named scarlet Banksia.

The lowly greenhood is quite an incredible orchid. It grows in central northern Victoria and flowers in November-December at a time when most other orchids in the area have died off for the season.
