A visual tour of WA orchids

September 22, 2018

It was a source of great frustration to me that fieldwork in eastern Australia dictated that I leave Western Australia toward the end of August. However, late August in Perth is just about when things start to heat up on the wildflower front and so again, like last year, I will miss the best of the Western Australian Wildflower Experience.

Still, there are a few things to be seen in the winter months. I am very grateful to Ross and Carolyn Jones, who took me under their wing and showed me some of their orchid spots within a days drive of Perth. Not only did we see many beautiful orchids, I got to experience some of the countryside that I otherwise would not have seen.

How long do orchids live?

June 4, 2018

The short answer, I think, is that no one knows, but that wouldn't make an interesting blog post.

Now, to the long answer...

Orchid treasures from New Zealand

February 8, 2018

I was lucky enough to find 10 species of orchid while I was in New Zealand, some on the South Island and some on the sub-Antarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands.

A day on Enderby Island

January 11, 2018

On our first morning, we awoke close to the Snares, with hopes of a zodiac cruise and Snares Crested Penguins. But 60 knot winds left that idea dead in the water. Instead, we headed onwards toward Auckland Island...

Fast foward 24 hours and we awoke to complete calm: the sun was rising, the wind was still, the waters of Ross Harbour were smooth, and everyone was smiling. It was going to be a good day.

Tozers Bush Camp, Bremer Bay

October 3, 2017

Tozers Bush Camp is a wonderful little patch of bush, surrounded by farmland, on the road to Bremer Bay. We were drawn to visit the place because of their now-famous orchid tours including the highly sought-after Queen of Sheba, Thelymitra speciosa, which we saw. But the place is so much more than a couple of admittedly spectacular orchids. We were so taken by the place that I've dedicated a whole blog post to highlight some of the wonderful flowers that we saw when were there in late August this year.

I’d forgotten that I’d spent a magical afternoon at Calperum Station with Red-kneed Dotterels coming almost within touching distance in beautiful sunset light. The lowly greenhood is quite an incredible orchid. It grows in central northern Victoria and flowers in November-December at a time when most other orchids in the area have died off for the season. It grows on soil which is baked hard by the hot sun and seems an inhospitable place for a delicate little orchid to be growing. Plus, it is rare and just looks damn cool! . . #australiannativeorchids #australiannativeplants #pterostylis #pterostylisdespectans #summer #orchids #ausgeo #canonaus #macro_secrets #zeiss100mmf2

A little bit tongue-in-cheek 😛 I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of how weird these plumed greenhoods are. The densely hairy labellum is probably involved in pollinator attraction somehow but exactly how is unclear. There is some suggestion dagger flies are involved in pollination (including a great set of photos by Rudie Kuiter) but evidence is still scarce. . . #australiannativeorchids #pterostylis #greenhood #ausgeo #orchid #australiannativeplants #macro_secrets #zeiss100mmf2
